\nI'm thinking about a particular kid who liked to do "comic book" style books. He started with all kinds of detail that nobody could understand in his illustrations, and very few words- but he thought it was fantastic. Unfortunately, nobody could tell what was going on without a guided tour by the author. It took two years to develop, but he did finally, with lots of feedback particularly from confused peers, figure out that you have to make decisions about what you say with your pictures and what you say with your words. It wasn't just what was in the pictures, but how they interacted with the words, and how they pulled their weight of telling the story.
\n
\nThe other thing I am thinking of while reading the first chapter is that there is so much more to illustration than picture. Particularly in non-fiction I'd like to think about how to really use rich visuals in a report- not just accompany the animal report with a beautiful Beth OlShansky picture.
